Every year, the Austrian Mint surprises us with a collection that combines tradition, innovation, and unmistakable artistic flair. The 2026 coinage calendar is a cultural mosaic in miniature: coins that narrate the lives of pioneering women, revive myths and fables, explore the universe, celebrate Alpine customs, and keep traditions alive, such as the Easter and New Year coins.
In this presentation, I invite you to explore this fascinating journey series by series, understanding not only what airs and when, but also the meaning of each track.
“Unsung Heroines of Austria” – Great Austrian Women in Gold
This series pays tribute to Austrian women whose influence deserves to be remembered.
In January 2026, the focus will be on Hilde Loewe-Flatter , a Viennese composer and pianist who had to publish under a male pseudonym for her music to be taken seriously. Her works were heard in voices such as Marlene Dietrich's, but her real name remained obscure for a long time.
The coin will be 50 euros in 24-karat gold (Au 986) , weighing 1/4 ounce, and finished in Proof . A piece that combines artistic delicacy and cultural homage.
“Mythological Creatures” – Fables for 3 euros
This colorful series of 3-euro coins in copper-nickel alloy continues in 2026, with a standard finish but embossed and colored design. The
following coins will be released in 2026:
Hippocampus ( sea horse of classical mythology) – January
Fairy/Elf ( magical being from Central European folklore) – June
Basilisk ( medieval creature half rooster, half snake) – September
Unicorn (universal symbol of purity) – November
These coins, measuring 34 mm in diameter, feature color printing and, sometimes, luminescent pigments that glow in the dark. They are limited editions (65,000 pieces per design).
“In the Stars” – The zodiac in silver with natural stones
This 20-euro series in sterling silver (Ag 925) covers the twelve signs of the zodiac, with a semiprecious stone set for each sign. The
following will be issued in 2026:
Taurus – March, with amber
Leo – June, with rock crystal
Sagittarius – October, with blue sodalite
34 mm pieces, minted in Proof , with a highly defined relief and a glossy background. The mintage is limited to 30,000 units per design.
“Traditional and Modern” – Traditional Alpine clothing for 10 euros
Under the name "Trachten – Traditional and Modern," this series of coins introduces us to the different traditional costumes worn in Austria and their manufacture using local materials. Coins are available in three versions:
Copper ( UNC )
Sterling silver (Ag 925) (handcrafted finish with partial polishing)
Sterling silver in Proof quality
