On July 12, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation issued a new bimetallic 10-ruble coin from the “Ancient Cities of Russia” series. This time, the coin is dedicated to the beautiful city of Toropets, the capital of the eponymous district in Tver Oblast.Toropets
The settlement located in the present-day city of Toropets was initially called Krivit, Krivich or Krivitensk, derived from the name of the Slavic tribe of the Krivichi who lived there in the 7th-13th centuries, and later it was renamed Toropets, derived from the name of the Toropa River, which in the Slavic language means fast-flowing river.
The city was first mentioned in the Laurentian Chronicle in 1074 in connection with the name of Saint Isaac the Recluse of the kyiv Caves. Until the 12th century, the city was part of Novgorod, and then it became part of the Principality of Smolensk. From the middle of the 12th century, Toropets was the centre of the principality of the same name. Its first ruler was Prince Mstislav Rostislavovich the Brave. In the middle of the 14th century, Toropets became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
In 1503, the city was recaptured by Russian troops and became the center of the Toropets district, founded in the same year. In 1708-1719, the city was part of the Ingermanland Governorate, and in 1719-1722, it was merged with the Velikiye Luki province of the Saint Petersburg Governorate.
Later, in 1777, Toropets became the main city of the Pskov Viceroyalty and existed with this status until 1927, when the Toropets District was formed in the Leningrad Region. In 1935, the Toropets District became part of the Kalinin Region (renamed the Tver Region), and today, the Toropets District is part of the Tver Region.
The reverse of the coin features relief images of the coat of arms of Toropets on a fragment of the city landscape, and the inscriptions engraved on the outer ring “ДРЕВНИЕ ГОРОДА РОССИИ” (ANCIENT CITIES OF RUSSIA) at the top, and below, the name of the city “ТОРОПЕЦ” (TOROPETS).
The obverse of the coin features a face value of “10 РУБЛЕЙ” (10 RUBLES) in the centre, and inside the number “0” there is a latent image in which, depending on the viewing angle, we can see the number “10” or the inscription “РУБ” (RUB). There is also an inscription above “БАНК РОССИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA), and at the bottom of the composition there is the mint mark above the year of issue “2024”, which is framed on both sides respectively by a laurel branch and an oak branch.
