On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Czech composer and violinist Josef Suk, the Czech National Bank issued on January 3 a commemorative silver coin with a face value of 200 Czech crowns.Joseph Suk
Born on January 4, 1874 in Křečovice, he studied violin at the Prague Conservatory, and later composition. Today he is among the most important composers of Romanticism and Modernism in both Czech and European music. Among his main works are "Serenáda" (Serenade), "Asrael", "Pohádka léta" (Summer's Tale), and "Epilog" (Epilogue). Suk, together with his friends Karel Hoffmann, Oskar Nedbal and Otto Berger, founded the legendary Czech Quartet, which achieved worldwide fame and gave more than 4,000 concerts throughout Europe. He also worked as a teacher, and in 1922 he was appointed professor of composition at the Higher School of the Prague Conservatory, where he trained 35 composers, among them Pavel Bořkovec, Jaroslav Ježek, Emil Hlobil, Bohuslav Martinů, Karel Reiner and Dalibor Vačkář.
The reverse of the coin shows a portrait of Josef Suk, next to which are the inscriptions of his name "JOSEF SUK" and years of life "1874 - 2024" written around the edge of the coin. Below the portrait appears a facsimile of Josef Suk's signature and the initials of the coin's designer Petra Čánská, formed by the letters "P" and "Č".
On the other hand, on the obverse of the piece the body of a violin is represented on a handwritten score by Josef Suk. The vertical text “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” is superimposed on the violin strings, and the horizontal text with the face value “200 Kč” is placed below it. The Czech Mint mark, in the form of the letters "Č" and "M", is located near the lower right edge of the coin.
