A new silver coin with a face value of 5 euros was issued on November 21 by the Bank of Greece. This piece has been minted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Karpenisi, which took place in Evrytania (Greece), during the night of August 21, 1823, when the Ottoman troops and the Greek revolutionary army clashed.
In the ensuing battle, the Souliotes inflicted heavy losses on the enemy, but Markos Botsaris was fatally wounded. He was buried with great honors at Missolonghi. At the Battle of Karpenisi, the Greeks managed to fend off another Ottoman attempt to crush the Revolution, but lost a great military leader.
The reverse of the coin shows as the main motif a warlike scene from the Battle of Karpenisi. To the left of the representation we see the signature of the engraver “ΣTAM” (Geórgios Stamatopoulos), and above it the mint mark and the year of issue “2023”. In the lower area we see the face value "5 EΥΡΩ" (5 euro) and surrounding the coin the inscription of the coin's theme "200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΜΑΧΗ ΤΟΥ ΚΑΡΠΕΝΗΣΙΟΥ" (200 years since the battle of Karpenisi).
While on the obverse of the piece there is, in the center, the Greek coat of arms surrounded by the name of the issuing country "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Greek Republic) and a laurel wreath.
