The Iberian Pig had been confirmed for weeks as the protagonist of the new 2026 Spanish bullion ounce. The real news comes now: we already know the design of the coin and the way in which this animal, closely linked to the dehesa (pastureland), has been transferred to gold.

Images recently obtained by Numismática Visual reveal the appearance of Spain's sixth one-ounce gold coin. The Royal Mint (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda) will put it on sale next Monday, September 21, with a maximum mintage of only 5,000 pieces.

The Iberian Pig already has its design

The reverse side shows the animal in full figure, its head tilted and its snout resting on a bed of acorns. The scene is not merely a portrait of the Iberian pig: it places it in the environment associated with its traditional breeding and directly evokes the dehesa (pastureland) and the montanera (acorn season).

The figure occupies almost the entire field of the coin and stands out against a clear background, while the ground receives particularly meticulous treatment. At the top appears the inscription CERDO IBÉRICO (Iberian Pig) and, below it, the face value 1.5 EURO. To the left are the mint mark—the crowned M of Madrid—and the year 2026. A border of pine nuts surrounds the entire design.

The choice of motif brings to Spanish investment gold one of the animals most closely linked to the landscape, livestock farming, and culinary traditions of the country. The focus is on the animal and its environment, without resorting to any of the products typically associated with it.

The eight-real coin once again occupies the obverse

The obverse maintains the collection's common identity through a reinterpretation of the Spanish eight-real coin, one of the most recognizable images in Spanish monetary history. In the center appear two hemispheres beneath a royal crown, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules and ribbons bearing the Latin motto PLUS VLTRA, "Further Beyond," all set against a backdrop of waves.

The legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA runs across the top, while the lower section indicates its contents: 1 OUNCE 999.9 GOLD. Here too, all the elements are framed by a border of pine cones.

In the upper center, the quadruple latent image incorporated into this collection, starting with the 2022 Bull coin, remains. By changing the viewing angle, the mint mark, a five-pointed star, the euro symbol, and the silhouette of the pillarship can be seen successively. In the official image taken from the front, the star is the most clearly visible element.

The lowest maximum print run in the entire collection

One of the features that particularly distinguishes this issue is its maximum mintage of 5,000 coins. This is the smallest mintage limit since the inception of Spanish bullion in 2021 and represents exactly half the maximum authorized for the 2025 Brown Bear issue.

Year Reason Maximum authorized print run

2021 Iberian lynx 12,000
2022 Bull 15,000
2023 Carthusian horse 12,000
2024 Imperial Eagle 12,000
2025 Grizzly bear 10,000
2026 Iberian pork 5,000

These figures represent the maximum number of coins that could be minted each year, not necessarily the amount that was ultimately produced. Even with that level of precision, none of the five previous orders had set a ceiling as low as the one established for 2026.

It will go on sale on September 21st

The FNMT-Real Casa de la Moneda will begin selling it on Monday, September 21, 2026. The coins will be delivered encapsulated and can be sold directly by the institution itself or through the entities responsible for its distribution.

Although the coin has a face value of 1.5 euros, this figure should not be confused with its selling price. It is not a coin intended for circulation, but rather a collector's and investment coin containing one ounce of fine gold.

The price will be determined at the time of the transaction, taking as a reference the spot price of physical gold REUTERS XAU=, to which a 10% margin will be added. For this reason, there is no fixed price that can be announced in advance: it will depend on the value of gold when the purchase is finalized.
