Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital and most populous city of Lithuania, located in the homonymous province. It has 554 060 inhabitants. The city lies to the southeast of the country, about 30 km from the border with Belarus. It is the second city in population of the Baltic Countries, after Riga.

Capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 13th century until the end of the 18th century, Vilnius had a great influence on the cultural and architectural development of a large part of Eastern Europe. In spite of the invasions and destructions of which it was victim, the city has conserved an impressive set of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassic buildings, as well as its medieval layout and the surrounding natural landscape. All this served to be declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1994 and European Capital of Culture in 2009.
