Italy's 2 euro commemorative coins in 2024

250th anniversary of the founding of the Guardia di Finanza

The Guardia di Finanza is a special police force that is part of the Italian Armed Forces. It is a military body that reports directly to the Minister of Economy and Finance and to the public security service of the Ministry of the Interior. It carries out judicial police and public security tasks in the economic and financial sphere.

The coin features a stylised version of the heraldic emblem of the Guardia di Finanza Corps in the centre, interpreting the concept of security and offering a forward-looking vision of the role of the Corps, celebrating the past, combining it with the future and the challenges it will continue to face. This emblem includes several elements: the mountain, the sea and the sky, the natural environments in which the Corps operates, the griffin, a mythological animal that, according to legend, watches over the Treasury, represented by the Public Treasury, and the towered crown. At the bottom, “RI”, acronym for the Italian Republic; in the exergue, the dates “1774-2024”, the year of creation of the Guardia di Finanza Corps and the year of issue of the coin, respectively; on the right, “R”, the identifying mark of the Mint of Rome, and “MB”, the initials of the author Marta Bonifacio; above, in the form of an arch, the inscription “GUARDIA DI FINANZA”.

Rita Levi-Montalcini, Nobel Prize in Medicine 1986

Rita Levi-Montalcini (Turin, 22 April 1909 – Rome, 30 December 2012) was an Italian neurologist. She discovered the first known growth factor in the nervous system, research for which she received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986. Her findings have been fundamental to understanding the control mechanisms that regulate cell growth.

The coin shows in the foreground a portrait of Rita Levi-Montalcini, inspired by a photograph by Manuela Fabbri; in the background, a microscope taken from a medal designed by the Italian scientist’s brother, Gino Levi-Montalcini, with a horseshoe-shaped base as a good-luck charm for the Nobel Prize in Medicine she was awarded in 1986. At the top, in the form of an arch, the inscription “RITA LEVI-MONTALCINI”; on the left, “RI”, acronym for the Italian Republic, and “R”, identification code of the Mint of Rome; in the exergue, “2024”, the year of issue of the coin; on the right, “SP”, initials of the author Silvia Petrassi.
