The second installment in the Great Hunters coin series has been issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. This coin, minted in pure silver and with a face value of $20, features Canada's largest wild cat depicted using innovative Ultra High Relief (UHR) technology, the cougar.
Guided by its senses and gifted with both speed and agility, the puma does not need to make an astonishing display of strength when hunting. Instead, it stalks its prey silently, crouching, crawling and hiding in the foliage as it approaches, before quickly pouncing and delivering a deadly attack. Solitary and elusive, the puma relies on its senses to survive and prefers to remain unnoticed.
This animal is an opportunistic predator that hunts from dusk to dawn, and is known to hunt a variety of species, including mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, moose calves, coyotes, beavers, and mice. It relies heavily on its ability to hide and ambush its prey, and once it has had its fill, it will hide the remains and save them for another meal.
The reverse design, by artist Emily Damstra, has been engraved in 1.4mm Ultra High Relief (UHR), allowing the viewer to observe the high quality detail and depth of the depiction of a ferocious cougar in the Canadian wilderness. The cougar stalks silently and stands firm on its feet, its large paws cushioning and silencing its progress as it crawls up a rocky slope strewn with fallen leaves from the surrounding trembling aspen trees, creating a variety of textures within the same composition.
Finally, the obverse of the coin features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, a work by Canadian artist Steven Rosati, placed on a geometric pattern made with the maple leaf of the Canadian flag. Surrounding the composition we can see the inscriptions of the name of the monarch “CHARLES III”, the name of the issuing country “CANADA”, the year of issue “2024”, the abbreviated Latin legend “DG REX” (Dei Gratia Rex) (By the Grace of God, King) and the face value “20 DOLLARS”.
