The last coin issued in Peru, dated July 31, 2024, is a commemorative silver coin with a 1 sol denomination alluding to the Bicentennial of the Battle of Junín.

The Battle of Junín was one of the last clashes between royalist and patriot armies during the process of independence of Peru. It occurred on August 6, 1824, on the pampas near Lake Junín, in the central Peruvian mountain range. Simón Bolívar, then president of the Republic of Colombia, responded to the call of the Peruvian Congress to continue the war of emancipation started by José de San Martín in 1820. The victory at Junín set the stage for the Battle of Ayacucho, where freedom was secured for Peru and all of South America.

On the reverse of the coin, the bust of a soldier of the “Húsares de Junín” Cavalry Regiment is shown, and next to it the Monument to the Victors of Junín. Likewise, the legend “BICENTENARIO DE LA BATALLA DE JUNÍN” can be seen bordering the coin , and at the bottom the period being commemorated “1824 – 2024”.
