We could say that the design of Finland's 2 euro commemorative coin, which will be issued next autumn under the name "Climate Research in Finland", is disappointing but not surprising.
From my point of view, its design seems very poor and, as I said, disappointing, but not surprising, since the designs of Finnish coins have been among the worst for years. They are lucky that these coins are commemorative 2 euros and enter the collections of thousands of people, otherwise few people would buy them because of the attractiveness of their design.
The Finnish Mint knows very well that this is so and that the coin will be in high demand, whatever they represent on it, so they put minimal effort into making an attractive piece. Perhaps the European Commission should not only take into account the reason for which a coin is dedicated when approving it, it should also require a minimum of artistic quality.
The subject of the coin is a stylized beard lichen, with its root-like structure etched in the center of the coin's interior. On the outer faces of the inner part of the coin there is the legend “CLIMATE RESEARCH” in Finnish on the left side, and in Swedish on the right side. At the bottom of the interior of the coin is the inscription “2022 FI”. At the top of the inside of the coin is the mark of the Finnish Mint.
It will have an issue volume of 400,000 coins that will be issued in the fall.
