Swissmint has announced the release of two new 20 Swiss franc silver coins, launching the "Swiss Lakes" series. These coins are dedicated to Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano, two iconic landscapes in Ticino that represent the transition between the Alpine and Mediterranean worlds. The official release will take place on October 30, 2025, and marks the start of a collection designed to pay tribute to the country's natural heritage through its lake network.
All coins in the series share a common obverse, which, in addition to the institutional elements, incorporates a symbolic graphic motif directly related to the theme of the collection. The inscription "CONFŒDERATIO HELVETICA" appears at the top, while the face value of "20 FR" and the year of issue "2025" appear at the bottom. In the center, a Swiss cross within a circle is depicted, from which wavy lines radiate, evoking water, and above them, a stylized silhouette of mountains appears, recalling the natural setting in which most Swiss lakes are found. This design gives the obverse a distinctive character, balancing national identity with the landscape theme of the series.
The reverse of each coin is unique and dedicated to a specific lake. The Lake Maggiore coin features the elongated silhouette of this border lake, drawn with clean lines that evoke a stylized map and highlight the relationship between the body of water and the surrounding mountainous terrain. The inscription "Lake Maggiore" is discreetly integrated into the composition. This 66-kilometer-long lake stretches between Italy and Switzerland, with its northernmost tip in the canton of Ticino. It is known for its natural beauty, botanical gardens and historic villas, as well as its mild climate, quite distinct from other Swiss regions. On the Swiss shores, towns such as Ascona and Brissago stand out, attracting travelers and artists for decades with their openness and lakeside landscape.
The coin dedicated to Lake Lugano shares the same graphic language, but with a very different composition. Here, the meandering silhouette of the lake, with its arms and inlets, occupies the center of the design. The contour is precisely delineated and surrounded by lines that suggest the mountains that embrace its shores. The inscription "Lake Lugano" appears integrated into the lower part. This irregularly shaped lake, surrounded by a pronounced relief, is also located between Switzerland and Italy and is renowned for its harmonious landscape, abundant vegetation, and particularly mild climate. The city of Lugano, on the northern shore, is an important cultural and economic center, and its surroundings have been a meeting place of cultures and languages for centuries.
With this series, Swissmint offers a numismatic tour of the Swiss lakes, showcasing not only their geography but also their place in the country's memory and identity. Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano are just the first step in a map that, with future issues, will be completed over the coming years.
