On August 22, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a set of three commemorative silver coins, each with a face value of 10 hryvnias. The issue pays tribute to the country's main national symbols—the coat of arms, the flag, and the anthem—fundamental elements of Ukrainian identity, deeply linked to its culture, history, and the mentality of its people.
State symbols of Ukraine, a profound expression of its historical continuity
The coat of arms of the State of Ukraine, whose main element is the trident, dates back to the time of Prince Volodymyr the Great. Archaeological and chronicle sources attest to its use since the 10th century as the princely emblem. The image of the trident was minted on gold and silver coins, the zlatnyks and sribljanyks of Volodymyr the Great. In 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved the trident as the minor coat of arms of Ukraine, designating it as the main element of the major coat of arms, which also includes the coat of arms of the Zaporizhian Host.
The Ukrainian state flag consists of two horizontal stripes of blue and yellow. Its heraldic interpretation defines blue as a symbol of honor, loyalty, peace, the endless sky, security, and harmony, while yellow represents divine bounty, the Ukrainian wheat field, majesty, and respect. In the 20th century, blue and yellow became a symbol of the country's national awakening, especially during the demonstrations and events preceding the declaration of independence. In 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially approved the national flag of Ukraine as its state symbol.
The national anthem of Ukraine originates from the work "Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished," written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynskyi and later set to music by Mykhailo Verbytskyi. Over the course of more than a century and a half, this composition has established itself as an emblem of unity and national spirit for generations of Ukrainians. In 1992, it was officially adopted as the state anthem, and in 2003, its text was ratified by law.
Obverse
Coat of arms
The upper part of the coin features the lesser coat of arms of Ukraine: a golden trident on a blue background. The central motif, over sunbeams, features a stylized emblem used by Prince Volodymyr the Great of Kievan Rus, whose shape echoes the structure of the trident. On the left are the inscriptions indicating the year of issue "2025", the issuing country "UKRAINE", the face value, and the text "НАШ ГЕРБ" (OUR COAT OF ARMS).
Flag
The coin features the lesser coat of arms of Ukraine against a background of sunbursts and a stylized blue and yellow flag fluttering in the wind. The composition features the inscriptions at the top of the coin, "2025," the name of the issuing country, "UKRAINE," the face value, and the text "OUR FLAG." While, at the bottom of the design, the verses of the poem “The Flag” are shown: “СИНІЙ, ЯК РЕ, ЯК ДЕНЬ, ЗОЛОТИЙ – З З НЕБА І СОНЦЯ НАШ ПРАПОР ЯСНИЙ. ОЛЕКСАНДР ОЛМОЕСЬ» (BLUE LIKE THE SEA, GOLD LIKE DAYLIGHT – FROM THE SKY AND THE LIGHT OF THE SUN OUR FLAG SHINES. OLEKSANDR OLES).
Hymn
The coin depicts the lesser coat of arms of Ukraine against a background of a viburnum branch with red berries, next to a musical score with sunbeams in the background. On the left are the inscriptions indicating the year of issue "2025", the issuing country "UKRAINE", the face value, and the text "НАШ ГІМН" (OUR ANTHEM).
Reverse
Coat of arms
The coin features the lesser coat of arms of Ukraine in gold. On a plain background, there is a trident composition that symbolizes Ukraine's historical heritage: from the origins of the emblem, the two-pronged symbol of Sviatoslav the Brave and the symbols on silver and gold coins, through the symbols of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921, to the modern state symbol (represented as a latent image). At the top of the design, we also see the legend "НАШЕ КОРІННЯ" (OUR ROOTS).
Flag
The reverse of the coin features a gilded, embossed image of a stylized bird, adorned with ornaments and framed by sunbeams. The bird holds a bunch of viburnum with red berries, symbolizing the Ukrainian soul in its aspiration for freedom and independence. Below is the legend: "НАША DUSHА" (OUR SOUL).
Hymn
The coin features the Cossack Mamai in gold, framed by sunbeams, depicted beneath an oak tree. The Cossack symbolizes a free person, a protector, a warrior, a traveler, and a skilled horseman: he embodies the Ukrainian mentality and serves as a symbol of Ukraine's eternal protector, updated with modern realities: instead of a saber, modern weapons hang from the oak tree. In a semicircle above the Cossack are the following lines from the anthem, which are still used today: «ДУШУ Й ТІЛО МИ ПОЛОЖИМ ЗА НАШУ СВОБОДУ І ПОКАЖЕМ, ЩО МИ, БРАТТЯ, КОЗАЦЬКОГО РОДУ» (WE WILL GIVE UP BODY AND SOUL FOR OUR FREEDOM AND SHOW THAT WE ARE BROTHERS OF THE COSSACK NATION). While on the right side of the Cossack we can read the legend «НАШЕ ГАСЛО» (OUR MOTTO).
