He began painting in a naturalistic style of tenebrist illumination, influenced by Caravaggio. In addition to numerous depictions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted a multitude of portraits of the Spanish royal family and ordinary people, culminating in his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656).

THE FORGE OF VULCAN
THE FORGE OF VULCAN
In "The Forge of Vulcan," Velázquez immerses us in the world of classical mythology through one of its most famous myths: the infidelity of Venus with the god Mars. The work narrates the moment when Apollo reveals his infidelity to Vulcan in the presence
of the other blacksmiths.
The obverse of the first coin depicts the work entitled "La fragua de
Vulcano" (The Forge of Vulcan), created by Diego Velázquez in 1630 and kept at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. On the lower part of the coin, decorated with ornaments representative of the Baroque style, the legend LA FRAGUA DE VULCANO appears horizontally and in
capital letters.
THE SPINNERS
This painting, along with Las Meninas, is considered one of the painter's masterpieces, the best example of Spanish Baroque painting and one of the best Baroque paintings in the History of Art. The work represents the passage from matter (the spinning process) to form (the tapestry) through the power of art, which would be a defense of the nobility of painting.
The obverse of the second coin depicts the work entitled "Las hilanderas" (The Spinners), created by Diego Velázquez between 1655 and 1660, which is kept in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. On the lower part of the coin, decorated with ornaments representative of the Baroque style, the legend LAS HILANDERAS appears horizontally and in capital letters.
VENUS OF THE MIRROR
“Venus of the Mirror” is Velázquez’s only surviving female nude and one of his most celebrated works. Its nickname, “The Venus of Rokeby,” comes from Rokeby Park, a country house in County Durham, where the painting hung for much of the 19th century.
The obverse of the third coin depicts the work entitled "Venus of the Mirror", created by Diego Velázquez between 1647 and 1651, which is kept at the National Gallery in London. On the lower part of the coin, decorated with ornaments representative of the Baroque style, the legend VENUS DEL ESPEJO appears horizontally and in capital letters .
Common Reverse
On the reverse (common to all three coins), the monument to Diego
Velázquez made by the Sevillian sculptor Antonio Susillo, which is located in the Plaza del Duque de la Victoria, in Seville, is reproduced. To its right, at the top, the mint mark. To its left, and from top to bottom, the face value of the coin 10 EURO, the legend

MARS
This is a Baroque work in which a compositional system is established in which the geometric structure prevails, and the attitude or posture of the figure, whose attitude is one of repose, is based on principles of symmetry. An important aspect of Velázquez's work is the way he executes the hands, something typical of the Sevillian artist, as he never finishes them completely. It is as if he were sketching them rather than drawing them.
The reverse features a reproduction of the work entitled "Mars", created by Diego Velázquez around 1638 and kept at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. To the right, in two lines and in capital letters, is the face value of the coin, 50 EURO; below, the

THE TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS
This was his first attempt to depict a mythological fable. The presence of Bacchus allowed the painter to depict one of his first male nudes, and that figure dominates the composition thanks to the luminosity of his body and clothing. The painting has been interpreted as an allegory of wine, which is not only capable of bringing joy to humans and inducing non-rational states, but also of stimulating poetic creation.
The obverse depicts the work entitled "The Triumph of Bacchus", created by Diego Velázquez between 1628 and 1629 and kept at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. The motifs are surrounded by a graphic pattern evoking the filigree work characteristic of the Baroque, interrupted at the bottom by a section within which appears, in a circular manner and in capital letters, the legend THE TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS.
The statue of Velázquez is the image depicted on the reverse of the gold coin. This statue, a work by the Sevillian sculptor Antonio Susillo, was made in 1889 and the pose of the statue was based on the image of Velázquez in his painting Las Meninas. To the right, in two lines and in capital letters, the face value of the coin, 400 EURO; below, the mint mark. To the left, in two lines and in capital letters, appears the legend DIEGO VELÁZQUEZ. In the upper left, in an ascending circular direction and in capital letters, appears the legend ESPAÑA 2024.
