The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) has presented a new collection of 50-colon coins, which highlight the fauna of the country's ecosystems. These coins are part of the Bank's new monetary cone, which changes their size and characteristics with respect to the current 50-colon coins (9 euro cents).

The new collection, called “Fauna of the ecosystems”, consists of six pieces to present species of the biodiversity present in Costa Rica: the morpho butterfly (tropical cloud forest), the short-haired frog (tropical rain forest), the hawksbill turtle (coral reef), the lizard or anolis (tropical dry forest), the sailor crab (mangrove) and the wild rabbit (páramo).

The first coin to be issued, both in its collectible and regular circulation versions, is the Morpho butterfly coin, available since yesterday, November 12, 2024.

These coins feature the legends "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica" on the upper part of the obverse, as well as three bars on the lower part of the coin in high relief that facilitate their recognition by touch.

The reverse features the name of each of Costa Rica's ecosystems. For the first coin issued, you can read "Tropical cloud forest" and the common and scientific names "Morpho butterfly" and "Morpho helenor marinita." The design also shows a proportion of the map of the tropical cloud forest, and the year "2023" corresponding to the year of approval of the design by the Board of Directors of the
Central Bank of Costa Rica.

The morpho butterfly lives in secondary forests and riverbanks. It can be observed on both sides of the Talamanca, Guanacaste and Tilarán mountain ranges; the eastern slope of the Central Volcanic Range; the Cerros del Aguacate; the Osa, Santa Elena and Nicoya peninsulas; the valleys of Coto Colorado and La Estrella; the plains of Los Guatusos, San Carlos, Tortuguero and Santa Clara; and in Punta Cahuita; at altitudes of 0 to 1,800 meters above sea level. As adults, they feed on rotting fruit and fungi.
