On October 27, the San Marino Philatelic and Numismatic Division officially issued the euroset in Proof quality with the San Marino euro coins minted in 2022.
This set includes the eight regular circulation coins, plus the two 2-euro commemorative coins issued for the “530th anniversary of the death of Piero della Francesca” and for the “Bicentenary of the death of Antonio Canova”.
The coin depicts one of the painter's best-known works, the emblematic profile of the Duke of Urbino, a masterpiece by Piero della Francesca, one of the greatest Renaissance painters, closely linked to the court of Urbino. The ceremonial portrait of the patron comes from the famous diptych of the Dukes of Urbino, painted in oil on panel and kept in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. On the left is the name of the issuing country "SAN MARINO", on the right side of the image the name of the issue reason, as well as the years "1492" and "2022", the "R" as the mintmark of Rome and the initials CM (Claudia Momoni) belonging to the designer of the coin.
San Marino celebrates the art of Antonio Canova on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of the Venetian painter and sculptor. The 2-euro commemorative coin bears on the reverse the relief image of the sculpture of the goddess Hebe, a work that Canova made between 1796 and 1817 in 4 copies that are preserved in Berlin, Saint Petersburg, Chatsworth and Forlì. The latter is the one that has been chosen for the San Marino coin. Initially highly criticized for Canova's stylistic choices, which combined marble with bronze details and, especially in the first two works, covered the candid white marble with a pinkish patina, the sculptures of La Hebe are today considered among the masterpieces of neoclassicism.
This product has been put up for sale at a price of €131 plus VAT in San Marino. The issue volume is 2,300 units.
