The German Federal Ministry of Finance announces the issuance of a 20 euro coin for 22 September to celebrate "1,200 years of Corvey Abbey", one of the most significant sites of Carolingian art, named in 2014 by the Unesco as a World Heritage Site.

Corvey Abbey is a Benedictine abbey located near the Weser River, in the town of Höxter, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is an imperial Abbey of the Holy Roman Empire founded in the Middle Ages and used until the 19th century, when it became a secular building.

There is the oldest and only almost completely preserved Western Carolingian work in the world, as well as unique archaeological relics of the Carolingian period.

The coin, designed by artist Bastian Prillwitz, shows the many facets of Corvey's 1,200-year history. The artistic design is clear and ornamental without sacrificing rich detail and spatiality. The knightly perspective manages to bring us closer to the important history of the monastery and castle complex in a haphazard way.

The smooth edge of the coin is engraved with the inscription: „WO DER HIMMEL DIE ERDE BERUEHRT“ (WHERE THE SKY TOUCHES THE EARTH).

On the value side, a stylized eagle, the inscription “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the face value “20 EURO”, the year of issue “2022”, the twelve European stars and the mintmark “F” (Stuttgart) are shown. and the metal and its purity «SILBER 925».

The coin is made of sterling silver (Ag 925). It has a weight of 18 g, a diameter of 32.5 mm and is produced in two qualities, BU and Proof. The BU mint quality coin will be put up for sale at its face value (20 euros). The Proof quality coin is issued at a higher selling price, yet to be determined. The total issue volume will be around one million pieces.
