Under the name "Dinosaurs of Portugal", the second Portuguese coin in the series has just been issued, which has the "Lourinhanosaurus antunesi" as its protagonist.

The coin has two versions, like almost all the collectibles issued in Portugal, one in the “classic” style and the other in color that glows in the dark. The novelty with respect to other similar series is that it has fluorescent inks on both sides, so the coin has elements that light up in the dark, on one side, and on the other.

The past is not something fixed, we are always discovering new facts and we have to change our perspective, as Octávio Mateus, a Portuguese paleontologist who has unearthed countless dinosaur fragments in Portugal, can say. Of the many species found, one of the most fascinating is the Lourinhanosaurus antunesi, a carnivorous theropod that inhabited the western region of Portugal during the Late Jurassic.

The “Lagarto da Lourinhã” received its name in honor of the famous paleontologist Miguel Telles Antunes. The discovery of this dinosaur turned out to be very special, since, in addition to the skeletons of three individuals, one of them quite complete, a nest with more than 100 eggs was also identified in 1993. These archaeological findings made it possible to determine that a young adult could measure about 4.5 meters and weigh 160 kg.

The images that appear at the top correspond to the one that glows in the dark, minted in 925 silver and Proof quality.

Below we see the cupro-nickel version that can be purchased in Portugal at its face value, 5 euros.

Designed by scientific illustrator Joana Bruno, this collector's coin features the eggs of the Lourinhanosaurus antunesi. On the obverse, we see the skeleton of an embryo, using the outline of the coin as if it were the shell of the egg.

On the reverse, we see a newly hatched baby dinosaur taking in its surroundings.
