During this month of June, on a date yet to be determined, a coin with a face of 5 euros will be issued in Portugal, in two versions and with the same design, belonging to the series «Endangered Animal Species» dedicated to « Seahorse".
Seahorses are very different from all other fish: they swim upright, spend most of their time still, and move slowly. There are around 50 different species around the world and in Portugal we can find two types: the Hippocampus guttulatus (long-nosed seahorse) and the hippocampus (short-nosed seahorse), mostly in the lagoons of the Ria Formosa . They measure between 12 and 15 centimeters. These enigmatic creatures are worth getting to know better.
First I show you the coin in silver and Proof quality, this version has some details in color and a much more careful finish and presentation.
On the reverse of the coin, in the foreground, there is a stylized representation of a seahorse flanked by seagrass and algae, in the upper semicircle are the legends "CAVALO - MARINHO" and "PORTUGAL 2021" on the right.
On the obverse, occupying the entire central field, a pair of seahorses are represented in their habitat, and in the upper field appear on the left, the name of the author "CATARINA SOBRAL" and the legend "CASA DA MOEDA", in the center the face value "€ 5" and the national coat of arms of Portugal.
