The Magyar Nemzeti Bank, Bank of Hungary, has issued two coins with the same design under the name 'XVI. UEFA Labdarúgó-Európa-bajnokság '(XVI UEFA European Football Championship). The coins, designed by the artist Áron Bohus, have two facets, 2,000 and 10,000 florins, minted in cupro-nickel in BU quality and 925 silver in Proof quality respectively.
In June 2021, UEFA EURO 2020, the most important event in European football, will be organized by UEFA (Union of European Football Federations), for the 16th time, under various unusual circumstances. In the history of the European Championships, which began in 1960, it is the first time that eleven European cities, including Budapest, will host the matches, reinforcing collaboration and cooperation across Europe.
Budapest's debut as a host city will be on June 15. The venue for the UEFA European Championship in Hungary will be the Puskás Arena football stadium, where three group stage matches and one round of 16 matches will be played. By qualifying for two consecutive European tournaments, the Hungarian soccer team will play two of its group matches at home, with the Hungarian fans in the stadium.
Due to the coronavirus, UEFA decided to postpone this football event until 2021, something unprecedented in the history of the European championships. Initially, the event was to be held on the 60th anniversary of the first European championship.
On the coin, the realistic representation of the Puskás Arena, the venue of the matches in Budapest, stands out. The Puskás Arena is the most modern and multi-functional stadium with the most seats in Central Europe, the home of the Hungarian national team that was built on the same site as the old Népstadion. It was inaugurated on November 15, 2019. The new stadium evokes the old building, since the characteristic hanging pillars and the concrete grid that covers them are also present in the new stadium, and the typical tower was assigned a new function: It serves as the main entrance to the building. The representation of the stadium on the coin also reflects these characteristics.
On the reverse of the coin, at the top, in the center, appears the official logo of Euro 2020, below the legends «XVI. LABDARÚGÓ ”and“ EURÓPA-BAJNOKSÁG ”in two lines, while under the representation of the stadium there is the legend“ PUSKÁS ARÉNA ”. At the top right, the football association's brand "© UEFA TM" appears, and at the bottom left, the mastermark of the artist Bohus Áron, designer of the coin.
As the capital of Hungary is one of the host cities for the matches to be played at UEFA EURO 2020, the central motif on the obverse features the official Budapest logo. In the legend around the border, the names of the other cities selected as originally venues to host the event are shown, these are shown clockwise, in alphabetical order 'AMSZTERDAM BAKU BILBAO BUKAREST DUBLIN GLASGOW KOPPENHÁGA LONDON MÜNCHEN RÓMA SZENTPÉTERVÁR '(Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bukarest Dublin, Glasgow, Copenhagen, London, Munich, Rome, Saint Petersburg).
The composition is completed by the two lines above the logo, with the mintmark "BP", the year of issue '2021' and the word 'MAGYARORSZÁG' (Hungary), in the two lines below the logo is the facial '10 .000 ' or '2000' and the word 'FORINT'.
