One of the unknowns that we had to solve, regarding the issuance of the 2 euro commemorative coins corresponding to last year, was the Belgian piece "International Year of Plant Health 2020", of which a volume of issuance of 755,000 coins and that until now we were only aware that 155,000 had been issued, corresponding to the versions dedicated to collectors, 150,000 BU in coincard and 5,000 Proof in case. Today we already have official data on what has happened to the remaining 600,000.
The Federal Public Service of Finance of Belgium has released in a statement the coins issued in Belgium in 2020, in which it is specifically clarified how the commemorative 2-euro coin dedicated to the International Year of Plant Health has been issued. The statement, translated, reads as follows:
“The commemorative 2-euro coin was put into circulation to celebrate the international year of plant health 2020. It consists of 600,000 coins that were mixed with the other 2-euro coins currently in circulation. Therefore, these coins are not available in rolls, not for collectors, not even at the counters of the National Bank of Belgium. The coins were put into circulation during the year 2020, depending on the demand for 2-euro coins that was generated. "
This is bad news for collectors since many of them will already be circulating, with the consequent deterioration that this entails in the piece and the decrease of coins in SC or UNC quality. Although I also think that as there are many coins, 600,000, perhaps all of them are not distributed yet and some people know how to obtain them from the Banks, without them being circulated.
The inner part of the coin shows the official logo of the International Year of Plant Health 2020 (IYSA 2020), composed of leaves and the text "INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PLANT HEALTH". The leaves represent healthy plants as a source of the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, and all life on Earth. This positive image of leaves protected from deadly pests and diseases forms a circle, representing the world and emphasizing that plant health and protection are of global concern. Plant health is the key to ending hunger, reducing poverty, protecting the environment and boosting economic development.
As coins are minted by the Royal Netherlands Mint, the Utrecht mint mark, a caduceus, is positioned on the right. The mint mark of the director of the Belgian Mint, the Herzele municipality coat of arms, is on the left. The country code 'BE' and the 2020 mark are located at the bottom.
The twelve stars of the European flag appear on the circular crown of the coin.
