The footprint of humanity on Earth is unfortunately massive. So great that the experts now agree that the impact of humanity on the planet is so profound that it is time to declare a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. Examples of this impact are the radioactive elements scattered throughout the planet through nuclear tests, plastic pollution and the soot produced by fossil fuel power plants. These and other adverse effects are illustrated with exquisite detail in Anthropocene , the 2018 edition of the popular niobium silver coins minted by the Austrian Mint.

From the end of the Ice Age, about 11,700 years ago, the subdivision of the Quaternary geological period, during which the entire human civilization developed, is known as the Holocene. The partially scientific and partly philosophical concept of the Anthropocene is indeed a continuation of the Holocene under a new symbolic name. Different shades of green are used in the niobium core of the coin to illustrate this concept. Humanity and its huge imprint on the planet dominate both sides of the two-tone green niobium core of the coin, while the adverse effects of humanity on the planet Earth are shown in the outer silver ring of Anthropocene.
