On November 5, 2025, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a commemorative silver coin dedicated to the Archangel Michael, a figure deeply rooted in the country's religious, cultural, and symbolic history. This issue is part of the "Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine" series and pays tribute both to the nation's celestial protector and to a masterpiece of Ukrainian sacred art: the Baroque iconostasis of Zhovkva.
The Archangel Michael, venerated as a defender of good and leader of the heavenly armies, is also a historical symbol of protection for the Ukrainian people since the Christianization of Kyivan Rus'. This commemorative coin underscores his role as a spiritual guardian and revives Ukraine's rich iconographic tradition, especially that depicted in the work of Ivan Rutkovych in the 17th century.
The coin stands out for a design that merges religious tradition and historical art.
The obverse features a decorative arch inspired by local ornamentation, along with the small state coat of arms of Ukraine and the inscription "Who is like God?", a translation of the Hebrew name of the Archangel Michael. The design is completed with Baroque floral details and the official legends, the year of issue, and the face value.
The reverse side features a color reproduction of the Archangel Michael, based on the icon in the iconostasis of Zhovkva. Michael is depicted in a dynamic pose, clad in dark armor decorated with a Maltese cross and wearing a red cloak. In his hands, he holds a sword and scales, symbols of judgment and the struggle against evil. The background combines Baroque floral motifs and clouds, evoking the sacred aesthetics of the 17th century.
