On October 8, the Italian Mint (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano, IPZS) presented a new issue in its Italian Enogastronomic Culture series, dedicated to celebrating the culinary and winemaking arts that are an essential part of the country's identity.

On this occasion, the coin pays tribute to two great symbols of Piedmont: Barolo wine and chocolate, products that represent the culinary excellence and artisanal tradition of this northern Italian region. Both are emblems of quality recognized worldwide and reflect the refined and culturally rich character of the Piedmont region.

Barolo, considered by many to be the "king of Italian wines," is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the hills of the Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a wine renowned for its aromatic complexity, pronounced tannic structure, and excellent aging potential. Its nuances reveal notes of cherry, truffle, rose, and spices, uniquely expressing the terroir of this wine-growing region.

Piedmont is also renowned for its chocolate-making tradition, which was consolidated between the 18th and 19th centuries. The city of Turin is considered the birthplace of gianduia, a blend of cocoa and hazelnuts that emerged at the beginning of the 19th century, when the Napoleonic Wars caused a cocoa shortage.

From this innovation emerged the gianduiotta, an emblematic chocolate that has become a symbol of Turin's chocolate expertise.

The pairing of Barolo and Piedmontese chocolate creates an exquisite harmony between the intensity of the wine and the aromatic softness of cocoa. Beyond sensorial pleasure, this combination represents the union of history, culture, and culinary art.

The obverse of the coin features a foreground cityscape created with bars of different varieties of chocolate and some of Piedmontese chocolates, such as Cri Cri, Gianduiotto, Boero, and Cremino. In the center, the Mole Antonelliana, the symbol of Turin; in the upper left, a carafe, a glass, and a fine wood barrel represent Barolo wine, the region's excellence. The design also features the inscription of the issuing country, "Repubblica Italiana," the signature of the coin's creator, "M. BONIFACIO," and in the upper right, in the form of an arch, the legend "Piemonte."

On the reverse side, on the left, we see an image of the Gardens of the Reggia di Venaria Reale, the Savoy residence located in Turin, with the majestic Fontana d'Ercole Colosso complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the foreground. The composition is framed by a detail of the rosette of the Basilica of Sant'Andrea in Vercelli. The coin also features the inscriptions of the face value of the coin: "5 EURO" on the right; the inscription "SAPORI D'ITALIA" between two dots; the year of issue: "2025"; and at the bottom of the design, the initial "R", identifying the Mint of Rome.
