The Portuguese Mint has today issued the first piece in its new “Contemporary Portuguese Plastic Artists” series , paying tribute to Paula Rego (1935-2022) . Titled “Paula Rego – Let me paint you a story” , this collector coin celebrates the narrative and social universe of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Designed by Catarina Silva , the numismatic work evokes details from the painting O Anjo , one of Rego’s most iconic works, and foregrounds her powerful voice as a visual storyteller.
Biography of Paula Rego: the painter who gave voice to the silenced
Born in Lisbon in 1935, Paula Rego grew up in a liberal environment that encouraged her talent from an early age. In 1952, she moved to London , where she studied at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art . Her career was characterized by a deeply personal narrative style: dreamlike scenes, powerful female figures, and a blend of tenderness and violence that questions social and political norms.
Rego explored themes such as power, gender, oppression, and childhood , becoming one of the first Portuguese artists to achieve international acclaim. In the 1980s and 1990s, her series on abortion and authoritarianism in Portugal profoundly impacted social debate. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the United Kingdom and received multiple international awards.
Her work, always filled with narratives and symbols, sought to "paint stories" that gave voice to the marginalized and revealed human complexities. Paula Rego passed away in 2022, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence generations of artists.
