The Hungarian Central Bank's series dedicated to the ambitious "National Hauszmann Programme" to restore the Buda Castle palace district to the historic appearance it had between the late 19th and early 20th centuries continued on August 21 with the issuance of the fourth coin in the collection, this time dedicated to the Former Headquarters of the Red Cross.
Thus, one of the most notable achievements of the "National Hauszmann Program" to date has been the reconstruction of the former Red Cross headquarters at Dísz tér 1-2. The original building was constructed between 1901 and 1903 for the Red Cross of the Holy Hungarian Crown Countries, according to plans by Alajos Hauszmann and Dezső Hültl.
This five-story Historicist palace was a corner building that, in addition to being the imposing headquarters of the Red Cross, housed rented apartments and offices used by a ministry and the diplomatic services. The richly ornamented palace, with its large domes, fit perfectly into the eclectic cityscape of the Castle District.
The building suffered severe damage at the end of World War II, so the political decision was made to demolish it in 1946. However, given the importance of this area, one of the objectives of the National Hauszmann Program was to reconstruct the structure, work that finally began in 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
The reverse of the coin depicts various ornamental elements from the façade of the Old Red Cross Headquarters building, highlighting on the right a detail of a column decorated with a lion's head, depicted in relief, in an abstract style evoking the appearance of a model. At the bottom of the composition, the legend "VÖRÖSKERESZT EGYLET EGYKORI SZÉKHÁZA" (Old Red Cross Headquarters) is written, while on the right side of the design, we see the signature of the coin's designer, Zoltán Endrődy.
Finally, the obverse of the coin features two arched ornamental motifs in its central field, inspired by the wallpaper designs of the building's St. Stephen's Chamber. Both are divided by a line of beads, with the inscription of the face value in the center. The lower part of the design shows a representation of the building's façade, as it appeared between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Along the upper edge, in two lines, appear the name of the issuing country "MAGYARORSZÁG" (Hungary) and the year of issue "2025," accompanied on the left by the mint mark "BP" (Budapest).
