Yesterday, August 5, the Bank of Russia issued a new coin in the "Russian Federation" series. This series consists of 10-ruble bimetallic coins intended for circulation, commemorating the country's various regions (oblasts). This time, the coin is dedicated to the Smolensk Region.
The Smolensk Region , located in western Russia and bordering Belarus, is one of the oldest regions in the country, mentioned as early as 863 AD. Its capital is the city of Smolensk, known for its historical role as a strategic fortress in multiple wars, especially during the Napoleonic and Nazi invasions. Currently, the region has a population of around 850,000 and its economy combines industry (energy, machinery, food) with agriculture. It is also notable for its cultural heritage, such as the Smolensk Kremlin, and for protected natural areas such as the Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park.
The reverse of the coin features a relief image of the coat of arms of the Smolensk Region and the inscriptions divided by dots around the circumference 'РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ' (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) at the top and 'СМОЛЕНСКАЯ ОБЛАСТЬ' (SMOLENSK REGION) at the bottom.
The obverse of the coin features the face value of “10 RUBLE” (10 RUBLES) in the center, and inside the number “0” there is a latent image in which, depending on the viewing angle, we can see the number “10” or the inscription “RUB” (10 RUB). The upper inscription “BANK OF RUSSIA” also appears, and the lower part of the composition shows the mint mark located above the year of issue “2025”, framed on either side by a laurel branch and an oak branch, respectively.
