The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) has issued a commemorative silver coin, with a face value of 1 sol, in honor of the Centenary of the Reincorporation of the province of Tarata to Peru (1925-2025). The piece, of great historical and cultural value, commemorates a key episode of post-war South America and symbolizes the recovery of Peruvian sovereignty in this region bordering Chile and Bolivia.

To understand the significance of this coin, it is necessary to go back to the 19th century. Between 1879 and 1883, the War of the Pacific took place, a conflict that pitted Chile against the alliance of Peru and Bolivia. After the Allied defeat, Peru lost control of important territories in the south. The Tacna and Arica regions came under Chilean administration, while Tarata —a small neighboring mountain territory—also came under Chilean control in 1885.

For four decades, the population of Tarata lived under this occupation. However, in the context of subsequent diplomatic negotiations, Chile recognized that this area belonged to Peru. Finally, on September 1, 1925, Tarata was officially reincorporated into Peruvian territory.

Although small in area, the reincorporation of Tarata had a strong symbolic value: it was a step in the process of recovering the southern territories and a triumph of Peruvian national identity after the difficult postwar years.

On the reverse, the coin depicts a highly symbolic composition. In the foreground, the town square of Tarata is visible, featuring the Church of San Benedicto, a historical and architectural landmark of the province. In the background, the agricultural terraces appear, a testament to the ancient Andean tradition that still prevails in the area. Above the scene is the inscription "REINCORPORACIÓN DE TARATA AL PERÚ" (REINCORPORATION OF TARATA INTO PERU) and the commemorated years: 1925-2025.

On the obverse, as in other BCRP issues, there is the Coat of Arms of Peru, along with the text “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ”, the year of issue (2025) and the denomination: “UN SOL”.
