On the occasion of the eighth centenary of the miraculous apparition of the Holy Stigmata, the Vatican City Mint recently issued two collector coins in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. These pieces, minted in silver with a proof finish, come in denominations of 5 and 20 euros.

Saint Francis of Assisi

20€ Coin – The Stigmata

The artistic creation by Patrizio Daniele, depicted on the reverse of this coin, depicts one of the most notable episodes in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi: the reception of the stigmata. The saint is shown with open arms, at the exact moment he receives the wounds of Christ. In the background, Mount La Verna can be clearly seen, a place of profound spirituality donated in 1213 by Count Orlando di Chiusi della Verna to Saint Francis and his brothers to be used as a hermitage. According to hagiographic tradition, it was precisely at La Verna that, on September 17, 1224, Saint Francis had a heavenly vision: "a man, in the form of a seraph, with wings, suspended in the air, with his hands outstretched and his feet together, nailed to a cross..." (Vita prima di San Francesco d'Assisi, Tommaso da Celano). From that moment on, the same wounds as those of the crucified Christ began to appear on their hands and feet, visible signs of a deep spiritual connection.

5€ Coin – Francisco’s Places

On the reverse of this coin, the artist Orietta Rossi depicts with delicate spirituality the simple and austere façade of the Major Basilica, an essential part of the sacred complex of the Sanctuary of La Verna. This place, steeped in mysticism, welcomed Saint Francis in contemplation and prayer when, on September 17, 1224, he received the gift of the stigmata, a profound sign of his union with Christ. In the upper left corner of the composition, a circle shines with the luminous image of the Holy Spirit, a symbol of divine grace. The work evokes the famous terracotta by Andrea della Robbia, preserved on the main altar of the Chapel of the Stigmata, a silent testimony of faith and art.
