The long-awaited second 2-euro Vatican commemorative coin for 2024 has finally been issued, completing the 2024 series. The coin pays tribute to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi , an Italian engineer and inventor instrumental in the development of radio. Its release has been marked by a long wait following the restructuring of the Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office, which temporarily halted its activities in mid-2024.
Today, July 24, 2025, with the official reactivation of its website and sales system, the coin has finally been made available to the public, available in two versions: the traditional BU quality and the more exclusive Proof quality.
Who was Guglielmo Marconi?
Born in Bologna in 1874, Marconi was a telecommunications pioneer who decisively promoted the development of long-distance radio transmission and wireless telegraphy. His work earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909. His association with the Vatican dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when Pope Pius XI entrusted him with the construction of Vatican Radio , a station that began broadcasting on 12 February 1931. This project consolidated Marconi's position as a key figure not only in science but also in the modern history of the Vatican.
Coin design
The artist Loredana Pancotto drew inspiration for this broadcast from a historic photograph taken on February 12, 1931 , the day of the official inauguration of Vatican Radio . The image features Guglielmo Marconi , Pope Pius XI , and the then Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli , the future Pope Pius XII.
The design commemorates not only Marconi's figure, but also that historic moment when technology and faith came together to send a message to the world:
"I have the great honor to announce that in a few moments, the Supreme Pontiff Pius XI will inaugurate the Vatican City State radio station. The electric waves will broadcast his message of peace and blessing throughout the world, across space..."
In the upper left corner of the coin is the inscription "GUGLIELMO MARCONI" , accompanied by the dates "1874" and "2024" . Below is the text "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" , along with the artist's name "L. PANCOTTO" . On the left is the mint mark "R" , representing the Rome Mint.
Presentations and broadcast volume
The coin has been issued in two official presentations:
Quantity issued : 67,000 units
Quantity issued : 9,900 units
This gives a total of 76,900 officially issued coins , but the statement reveals that the total expected volume is 82,900 units , which leaves 6,000 coins still without a confirmed destination, although it will probably be the one called Busta, which combines numismatics and philately.
