In 2026, it will be 50 years since one of the most glorious moments in Czechoslovak football: the victory at the 1976 European Championship. To commemorate this historic milestone, the National Bank of Slovakia (Národná banka Slovenska, NBS) has launched a public competition to design a commemorative 2-euro coin to celebrate this special anniversary.

A historic tribute in numismatic format

The commemorative coin will be officially issued in 2026 and will feature the Czechoslovakian national team's feat, which was crowned European champion after defeating the all-powerful West Germany in an epic penalty shootout. The most memorable moment of the tournament was Antonín Panenka's masterfully converted penalty, which gave rise to a technique immortalized in his name.

What makes this victory especially significant from a Slovak perspective is that eight of the starting eleven in the final were Slovak, including names such as Anton Ondruš, Karol Dobiaš, Ján Švehlík, and Jozef Móder. Goalkeeper Ivo Viktor was named the tournament's best player, and five other members of the team were included in the All-Slovak Championship XI.

The rules of the design competition

The competition announced by the NBS is an anonymous and open call for artists, designers, and sculptors, who must submit proposals for the design of the national side of the coin. The design must comply with the technical regulations for 2-euro coins, which include a bimetallic structure with a gold center and silver-plated outer ring, as well as the mandatory placement of twelve European stars on the ring.

Mandatory elements that must appear in the design include:

The name of the country: “SLOVENSKO”

Year of issue: “2026”

The text: “Majstri Európy 1976” (“European Champions 1976”)

Motifs related to triumph, such as the cup, a vintage soccer ball, or players celebrating victory.

Designs may not contain political elements or messages that could be associated with political parties or ideologies.

Dates and awards

Participants have until September 16, 2025, to submit their proposals, which must be submitted as a plaster model or digital format according to the technical requirements established by the NBS. The models must clearly indicate the separation between the core and the outer ring of the coin.

Cash prizes have been established for the best designs:

1st prize: €2,500

2nd prize: €2,000

3rd prize: €1,500

In addition, additional prizes totaling €4,000 may be awarded.

The creator of the design ultimately selected for minting will also receive an additional fee of €1,250 for licensing and collaboration in the coin's production process.

A symbol of national identity

The creation of this commemorative coin not only pays tribute to a brilliant chapter in Czechoslovakia's sporting history but also celebrates Slovakia's crucial contribution to that feat. In a current context where shared history is intertwined with individual national identities, this initiative becomes a symbol of national pride and historical legacy.

The public and coin collectors will be able to enjoy this special edition in 2026, half a century after Czechoslovakia emerged as European continental champion, with Slovakia as a silent but key player.
