In 2026, Estonia will issue a commemorative 2-euro coin that will surprise more than a few. It won't feature a monument, a politician, or a historical date, but Sipsik , a cuddly rag doll beloved by generations of Estonian children. And who exactly is this character who will now be part of European currency? We'll tell you.

Who is Sipsik?

Sipsik was born in 1962 from the imagination of writer Eno Raud , one of the most influential authors of Estonian children's literature. Drawn by illustrator Edgar Valter , Sipsik is a rag doll who comes to life to accompany a little girl named Anu on her little everyday adventures.

This doll, with big ears, a striped shirt, and a permanent smile, doesn't have magical powers, but he does have something even better: imagination, tenderness, empathy, and a playful spirit . He feeds birds, explores the forest, builds rockets out of shoe boxes, and, above all, he's the faithful friend we all wish we had as children.

Why is it so important in Estonia?

In Estonia, Sipsik is an absolute classic , just like Platero in Spain or The Little Prince in France. It has accompanied generations of children for over six decades and lives on in new editions, animations, and films. In 2020, an animated film titled Sipsik (Raggie) was even released , which was a huge success in the Baltic countries.

More than a character, he is a symbol of simple but essential human values : friendship, creativity, joy and the innocence of childhood.

Why would it appear on a 2 euro coin?

The Bank of Estonia ( Eesti Pank ) has announced that it will issue a 2-euro coin dedicated to Sipsik in 2026 as a tribute to his contributions to the country's culture and childhood . According to the central bank's deputy chairman, Ülo Kaasik, the figure embodies values that remain fundamental: kindness, ingenuity, sensitivity, and understanding.

Fantasy image of what the coin could look like

The design, which is already in progress, will be based on Edgar Valter's original drawings and will be developed in collaboration with the Estonian Children's Literature Center and the author's family. Unlike other themed coins, there will be no public competition , as the goal is to preserve the authenticity of the character.

Will you be able to use it in Spain?

Yes. As this is a commemorative 2 euro coin , it will be legal tender throughout the Eurozone , including Spain. Although the circulation will be limited, it's quite possible that it will end up in your hands at some point, in a change at a store or café.

And in Spain, who knows Sipsik?

The truth is that Sipsik is virtually unknown in Spain . There are no official Spanish translations or adaptations available here. Even so, his inclusion on a European currency could be a wonderful opportunity for many to discover this charming character and gain insight into the rich children's literary culture of the Baltic Sea.

A coin that is a little story

The Sipsik coin isn't just a tribute to a fictional character; it's also a reminder of what matters in childhood: imagination, friendship, and the small moments. In an increasingly digital world, what better way to remind us of that than with a real, physical coin featuring a paper character?

So now you know: if in 2026 you receive a coin with a small figure engraved in the center... don't pass it up! You may be holding one of Northern Europe's most beloved stories.
