To mark the centenary of one of the most important Paleolithic archaeological finds, the Czech National Bank issued a new 200-koruna silver commemorative coin on June 18. This coin honors the discovery of the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, the oldest known ceramic figurine in the world, found in 1925 in South Moravia.

This recent issue not only celebrates a milestone in European archaeology, but also recognizes the symbolic and cultural value of this female figure, considered an exceptional testament to the spiritual thought and technological prowess of prehistoric societies.

Venus of Dolní Vestonice

The Venus of Dolní Věstonice is one of the most outstanding works of art from the Paleolithic. Estimated to be between 27,000 and 29,000 years old, it was created during the era of the mammoth hunters, a culture with remarkable technological mastery. In addition to making flint tools, they also worked with mammoth bone, antler, and ivory, materials they used for both utensils and artistic and decorative objects.

This palm-sized ceramic figurine measures 11.5 cm high, 4.4 cm wide, and 2.8 cm thick. It was discovered in July 1925 by an archaeological team led by Professor Karel Absolon at the Dolní Věstonice site in South Moravia. It is currently part of the collections of the Anthropos Institute of the Moravian Museum in Brno.

The obverse of the coin shows the Venus of Dolní Věstonice from behind, facing right, against a background depicting the landscape of the Pavlov Hills. The name of the issuing country, "ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA" (CZECH REPUBLIC), along with the face value "200 Kč", are located in the lower left corner of the composition, divided by a period. The Czech Mint's mark, with the letters "Č" and "M", is located to the right of the Venus of Dolní Věstonice.

The reverse of the coin depicts the Venus of Dolní Věstonice facing forward, against a landscape with two mammoths. The inscription "VĚSTONICKÁ VENUŠE" (Venus of Dolní Věstonice) is located in the lower left corner of the coin, and next to it are the years "1925–2025". The initials of the coin's designer, Majka Wichnerová, consisting of the letters "M" and "W", are located above the year "2025".
