The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) has announced the issuance of a new 10-colon coin (less than 2 euro cents) as part of the country's new monetary cone. This change was made official on Friday, April 4, 2025, and aims to revamp the lower-denomination coin with improved design and security features.

Features of the New Currency

The new 10 colones coin has the following specifications:

Alloy: Stainless steel with silver hue.
Dimensions: 20 millimeters in diameter and 1.22 millimeters thick.
Obverse: Includes the face value "10 colones", the legends "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica" at the top.
Reverse: Features the National Coat of Arms and the year "2023", which corresponds to the time of approval of the design by the Board of Directors of the Central Bank.
Tactile Features: For easy identification by touch, the coin features a continuous grooved edge and a raised bar at the bottom of the obverse.

Circulation and Use

This new coin will circulate gradually through entities within the national financial system, according to economic needs. Unlike the coins included in the collection program, this one has a single design on its reverse and will function as a means of payment.

Coexistence with the Previous Currency

The new coin will coexist with the previous 10-colon coin until the latter is gradually phased out of circulation. This renewal process is part of a broader effort by the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) to modernize Costa Rica's monetary system.

The Central Bank hopes this change will facilitate everyday transactions and improve the security of the monetary system overall.
