On the 50th anniversary of her death, the Monnaie de Paris honors the legacy of Joséphine Baker, an iconic figure of the 20th century. An exceptional artist, a symbol of audacity and freedom, and a fervent defender of human rights, Baker left an indelible mark on history.

To celebrate her life and her fight for equality, two gold and silver coins have been issued. Their manufacturing technique echoes ancient hammer minting, giving them a unique relief and finish. The collection also includes two silver coins, worth 10 and 100 euros.

Launched in celebration of International Women's Rights Day, this collection is more than an artistic tribute; it's a reminder of Joséphine Baker's unwavering commitment to equality and justice.

Joséphine Bake

Joséphine Baker was an American-born mixed-race dancer, singer, actress, and resistance fighter. Initially known for her dance performances in the United States, she moved to Paris, where she became a true icon.

In the 1920s, Joséphine Baker was at the height of her artistic career when she became the undisputed queen of the Roaring Twenties in Paris, where she shone on the stage of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Her influence as a Black artist in a Europe fascinated by the exotic made her an icon of freedom of expression. A Resistance fighter and heroine of World War II, she used her fame and travels to transmit valuable information to the Allies as a spy for the French Resistance, concealing messages in her musical scores.

For her acts of bravery, she received several prestigious decorations, including the Croix de Guerre and the Resistance Medal. In 1961, she was also named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by General de Gaulle.

Alongside her artistic career, Joséphine Baker was involved in the fight for equality and civil rights. Her support for the African-American liberation movements and her participation in the March on Washington alongside Martin Luther King in 1963 symbolized her dedication to racial justice. She was a pioneer in the fight against racism, being the first Black woman to address a large audience at this historic event. Driven by a utopian vision of a world without discrimination, she adopted twelve children from different backgrounds, forming her famous "Rainbow Tribe." With this initiative, she wanted to demonstrate that people of different races and cultures could live together in harmony and love.

10€ silver coin

The common obverse of the collection shows the engraving of one of the most famous portraits of Joséphine Baker, set against an iconic art deco background typical of the 1920s. Surrounding the central image is the inscription of her name, and below the years in which she lived: "1906 - 1975".

On the reverse of the gold and silver collector coins, a composition depicts different parts of Joséphine Baker's life. Her past as an adoptive mother and humanitarian, represented by the famous "Rainbow Tribe," as well as her past as a Resistance fighter and heroine with several decorations: the Croix de Guerre medal, the Legion of Honor medal, and the commemorative medal for voluntary services to Free France. Finally, her past as a singer and dancer, a star of the Roaring Twenties, is evoked with a profile of Joséphine Baker in a stage costume against an Art Deco feathered background. A famous quote from Joséphine Baker surrounds the central composition: "I have learned never to underestimate the strength and resilience of a woman." The logo of the Monnaie de Paris and that of Joaquín Giménez, general engraver of the Monnaie de Paris, are also featured, as is the year of issue, "2025."
