The arrival of spring is celebrated in Austria with a splendid explosion of colour, and the massive blooming daffodil is the one to brighten up the landscape after the cold, dark winter months. Symbolising new beginnings, this flower is a powerful reminder of the rebirth of nature and the benefits of walking outdoors while the world is in bloom around us.
The daffodil, also known as Narcissus , is a flower that blooms every year, representing the eternal cycle of nature. Its presence in the spring season is not only a visual spectacle, but also a symbol of hope and opportunity. The Austrian Mint captures this essence in its traditional Easter coin, which in 2025 will be available in copper or silver, under the name Narcissus . This coin commemorates the arrival of spring, evoking the rebirth of nature and the richness of life’s cycles.
Beyond its beauty, the daffodil is also imbued with meaning. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a young man of great beauty who, upon falling in love with his own reflection in a pond, perished and was transformed into the flower that bears his name. This legend, although a warning about the dangers of vanity, can also be interpreted as a reflection on self-discovery. Those who recognize and embrace their own essence achieve true confidence, not born of arrogance, but of a healthy and balanced self-esteem.
The daffodil, in addition to its symbolic importance, is the star of one of Austria’s most important celebrations: the Narzissenfest , the country’s largest flower festival. Held in the picturesque Ausseerland region in the heart of Austria, this annual event makes the delicate star-shaped flower the centre of the festivities. For several days, the region comes alive with colour and life, culminating in a spectacular parade of lovingly crafted floral sculptures. The figures, which represent everything from animals and mythical creatures to traditional motifs, parade through the streets before gently floating on the lake, creating a unique scene that fuses art, nature and tradition.
The Narzissenfest not only celebrates the daffodil flower, but also community togetherness and the rich traditions of the Ausseerland region. It is a reminder that just as the daffodil is reborn every year, spring brings with it constant renewal, both in nature and in our lives. An event that, with its majesty and symbolism, invites us to enjoy the wonders of the present and look to the future with hope and optimism.
The daffodil thus becomes much more than just a flower: it is a symbol of nature at its finest, of new beginnings, of self-discovery and of Austria's rich cultural heritage. All of this is reflected in the Easter 2025 coin, a tangible tribute to the magic of spring and the eternal renewal of life.
The reverse of the Narcissus coin shows four blooming daffodils, representing the three flower species native to Austria. On the left is depicted the star-shaped daffodil (Narcissus radiiflorus), while the white daffodil, also known as the poet's daffodil ( Narcissus poeticus ), is depicted in the centre and the wild daffodil, also known as the Lenten lily ( Narcissus pseudonarcissus ), is depicted on the right.
The coats of arms of Austria's nine federal provinces appear on the obverse of the coin and give the coin its nine-sided shape.
