The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) has announced the issuance of a new coin depicting the red-breasted frog, one of the most emblematic species of Costa Rican biodiversity. This coin is the second edition of the “Fauna of Ecosystems” series , which celebrates the rich fauna of the country’s diverse ecosystems. The new piece will be officially launched on Monday, February 24, 2025, and will be available in both a collector’s and circulation version .

Design and Features of the Coin

The coin, with a face value of 50 colones (approximately 9 euro cents), presents a notable distinction between its versions. The collector's version has colored details, while the circulation version does not. This coin is part of the new monetary cone of the Central Bank of Costa Rica, which means that its size and characteristics differ from the 50 colones coins currently in circulation.

On the reverse of the coin, the texts “Tropical rainforest” and the scientific name of the species, “Agalychnis callidryas” or “underpants frog” stand out . This figure is placed on a partial representation of the map of the tropical rainforest , with 2023 as the year of approval of the design by the Board of Directors of the Central Bank.

On the other hand, on the obverse of the coin, the legends "Republic of Costa Rica" and "Central Bank of Costa Rica" can be read , accompanied by three bars in high relief that allow easy tactile identification.

The Underpants Frog: A Symbol of Biodiversity

The red-eyed tree frog (also known as the red-eyed tree frog ) is a nocturnal, solitary species that inhabits mainly treetops.
