The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano has issued a new collector coin in the series dedicated to the rich Italian food and wine culture. This time, the coin issued is dedicated to the “Molise Region” and its “Tintilia wines and Caciocavallo cheese”, among others.

Molise, a small region in southern Italy, is known for keeping alive rural traditions and customs rooted in its history. Among the festivals, the Feast of San Basso in Termoli and the Festival of the Mysteries in Campobasso, where religious scenes are represented with living figures, stand out.

In terms of food and wine, Molise offers simple and authentic products. Typical dishes include pasta alla molisana, prepared with lamb and peppers, and zampogne (local cured meats). Caciocavallo and stracciata are iconic cheeses, while Tintilia wine and local olive oil are standouts. Molise cuisine reflects its connection to land and sea, blending Mediterranean and mountain flavours.

The Coin

Obverse: In the background, decorations inspired by the wrought iron craftsmanship typical of Molise, with two devils, one in a more traditional form and the other in the form of a girl trying to tempt Saint Anthony the Abbot by waving a fan. These masks are the protagonists of the parade of the “Mysteries” held on Corpus Christi in Campobasso, which have become symbols of the capital of Molise. In the foreground, white and black truffles on oak leaves and, on the left, a caciocavallo and bunches of Tintilia grapes. At the top, the inscription “MOLISE”; in the exergue, “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA” and the name of the author “M. BONIFACIO”. Coin with colourful elements.

Reverse: Right, in the foreground, a statue of the Samnite Warrior created by Giuseppe Guastalla and located in Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Pietrabbondante. In the background, a representation of the five main “sheep tracks” present in the Molise region highlighted in a decorative composition inspired by a piece of filigree artisanal goldsmithing typical of Alto Molise, on which the outline of the Region and a texture with the writing “MOLISE” are fixed in the corners of a star. At the bottom, the value “5 EURO” and, around it, the inscription “SAPORI D'ITALIA”; on the left, R, identification of the Mint of Rome; top left, “2024”, the year of issue of the coin.
