The Bank of Greece has issued a coin with a face value of €1.50 dedicated to the popular Aesop fable known as "The Hare and the Tortoise", which was later also rewritten by other fabulists such as Félix María Samaniego or Jean de la Fontaine.

The hare and the tortoise

In this fable, perhaps Aesop's best-known, a hare was teasing a tortoise for being too slow. One day, the tortoise, tired of the hare's boasts, challenged the tortoise to a race, and the hare accepted. The tortoise set off, slowly but surely. The hare soon outpaced the tortoise and, confident of winning, took a nap halfway through the race. When it woke up, it found that its slow but steady crawling competitor had gotten there before it. The moral of the fable makes it clear that diligence and perseverance can triumph over talent when great effort is involved.

 

The reverse of the coin shows full-colour images of the hare lying on the grass, next to its competitor, the tortoise, who is slowly but steadily advancing towards the finish line. Surrounding the composition is the mint mark, with the inscription “Ο ΛΑΓΟΣ ΚΑΙ Η ΧΕΛΩΝΑ” (The Hare and the Tortoise) in the upper right corner, and “ΜΥΘΟΥ ΤΟΥ ΑΙΣΩΠΟΥ” (Aesop's Fables) in the lower left corner.

 

On the other hand, the obverse of the coin shows us the final outcome of the fable, where the slow tortoise ends up crossing the finish line before the fast hare, which is left behind. Framing the design we also find the Greek coat of arms with the inscription “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” (Greek Republic) and the engraver’s signature (L. Pavli) on the right, the year of issue “2024” on the left, and at the bottom the face value “1.5 EΥΡΩ” (1.5€).
