A new coin has just been issued in Colombia with a face value of 20,000 pesos (4.22 euros) that has a redeemable power and can be used to carry out any type of monetary transaction for the equivalent of its face value.

The motif to which it is dedicated is the "Carriel Antioqueño", a type of small bag that is a cultural symbol of Antioquia.

Antioquian Carriel

The carriel antioqueño is a traditional accessory from the Antioquia region of Colombia. It is a typical bag that is part of the characteristic clothing of the paisas peasants, especially in the past, although today it is a cultural and heritage symbol.

It is a small bag, rectangular in shape and with rounded edges. It is usually made of leather or the skin of different animals, such as cow, goat or pig. It often combines various types and colors of leather, which gives it a striking appearance.

The pouch had several internal pockets and secret compartments. This made it ideal for carrying small, important items such as tools, documents, money, amulets or souvenirs. Traditionally, it was said that a pouch could hold “everything you needed for everyday life”, like a small portable trunk.

They often have handcrafted details such as engravings, visible stitching, and sometimes geometric figures or floral motifs. Some have tassels or additional embellishments.

The carriel was a practical accessory for Antioquian muleteers and farmers during their long days of work and trade. Today, it is used more as a cultural symbol in festivities, folk dances or as a tourist souvenir.

The word "carriel" comes from the English word carry-all, referring to its capacity to store multiple objects.

The Coin

The coin was designed by the Department of Communication and Economic Education of the Bank of the Republic. The Royal Dutch Mint was the company in charge of minting it.

The obverse shows the image of the typical 'carriel antioqueño' in which a border can be seen on the upper part, with four dotted, parallel and concentric lines, which represent the seams of the carriel. Made of leather, it has a strap to carry it across the shoulder. Its characteristic bellows shape is given by its multiple pockets, twelve on average, including five "secret" ones, whose opening is hidden so that only the owner knows where he keeps his most personal objects. The buckle, eyelets, rings and rivets guarantee its resistance, mandatory for an object associated with work and travel.

On the reverse, a muleteer appears from behind, wearing an Aguadeño hat, a leather apron and his essential carriel. He is looking towards the mountains, the scene of the Antioquian colonization during which Jericó was founded in 1850. It was there that the manufacture of carriels began in the 19th century, which soon spread to other municipalities such as Envigado. Also included is the border with four parallel, dotted and concentric lines that represent the stitching of the carriel, a latent image as a security element that, depending on the angle from which it is viewed, reflects the initials “BR” or the Arabic number “20”, the legend “REPÚBLICA DE COLOMBIA”, the denomination of “20,000 PESOS” and the year “2024”.
