As usual, the Austrian Mint is issuing its first coin with a mint date of 2025 in 2024 and, as is also already a tradition, this one is dedicated to wishing us luck for the year that begins in just over 40 days.
This year, the coin is being issued under the name “ Dancing without stopping ”, in a nod to lovers of Viennese music and dance culture in general.
“Dancing without stopping” turns the beginning of the new year into an inspiring experience filled with lightness and joy. This 2025 New Year coin symbolises the freedom to let go of the burdens of the past year and confidently enter the new year with vitality and optimism. Beautifully crafted, it combines the rich dance tradition of Vienna with the positive symbolism of new beginnings.
The intricate “ Dancing on ” design is inspired by two iconic figures from Viennese music and dance culture: the “Waltz King,” Johann Strauss II, and dancer and choreographer Grete Wiesenthal, whose anniversaries the coin celebrates.
Born 200 years ago, Johann Strauss II is world-famous for the unforgettable waltz melodies that shaped Vienna’s ballroom tradition and continue to embody its lightness, joy and unique elegance. His universally adored waltz, The Blue Danube, has become a symbol of the happiness and carefree spirit we all feel at New Year’s.
Born in 1885, Grete Wiesenthal revolutionised the dance world in the early 20th century with her modern solo interpretation of the waltz. With her distinctive physicality and intensity, she broke with traditional conventions, bringing to the stage an expressive, dynamic and vibrant style that continues to captivate today. Dance Away unites the lightness and vitality of these two influential figures and celebrates the unique sense of liberation that dance can offer, whether in a grand ballroom or alone.
Much more than just a coin, Dance Away is an inspirational talisman minted in honour of all those who want to welcome the new year with renewed energy and dance into the new year with peace of mind, confidence and joy for life. An ideal symbol of new beginnings, the coin radiates joy and positive energy, making it the perfect gift to send wishes of luck and success at the turn of the year.
The coin's design reflects the joy of movement and the expressiveness of dance. It shows a woman dancing in a flowing skirt that captures her rotation and energy. The skirt sways in harmonious lines, making the moment of the dance seem alive. The dancer spins on her own axis and embodies the free spirit conveyed by the coin.
The obverse of the nine-sided coin shows the coats of arms of the nine federal provinces of Austria, its face value of “5 euros” and the name of the issuing country “Republic of Austria”.
This 5 euro coin, like all those issued by Austria with this value, can be purchased in two versions, the copper one at face value and the silver one, presented in the wallet you see above, at a price of €21 plus shipping costs, in the Austrian mint's online store.
