The Royal Canadian Mint has just put on sale for the "modest" price of 13,000 Canadian dollars (8,685 euros) a coin made of 5 kilos of pure silver and a limited edition of just 100 units, under the name "Heraldic Landscape: Birds of Canada".

As of today, October 1, 2024, 5 kilos of silver are worth 4,590 euros.

Designed by Cathy Bursey-Sabourin, the reverse of the coin features a new version of Canada’s coat of arms, redesigned to fit a circular format. Surrounding the shield, the official birds of Canada’s provinces and territories, as well as heraldic stylizations and dividing lines representing key geographical features, are arranged counter-clockwise to form a pictorial representation of Canada from west to east and north to south.

From top left: a Steller's jay (British Columbia); a striped line for Pacific coastal waves; a defence line for the Canadian Rockies; a great horned owl (Alberta); a striated line for rounded hills of flows; a wheat carpet for meadows; a sharp-tailed grouse (Saskatchewan); a great grey owl (Manitoba); a common loon (Ontario); a wavy line for central lakes and the Canadian Shield; a snowy owl (Quebec); a black-headed chickadee (New Brunswick); a nebulous line for high tides in the Bay of Fundy; an osprey (Nova Scotia); a blue jay (Prince Edward Island); an Atlantic puffin (Newfoundland and Labrador); a wave line for the Atlantic coast; a ptarmigan (Nunavut); a bubbling skipper for the Arctic Ocean and the ice floes of northern Canada; a gyrfalcon (Northwest Territories); and a common raven (Yukon).

The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III made by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
