The Bank of Russia (Банк России) has issued this year a new 3-ruble silver coin from the series called "Historical Events" to commemorate 50 years since the start of construction of the Baikal-Amur Main Line (BAM), a 1,520-millimeter gauge railway line.

Baikal-Amur Railway (BAM)

On July 8, 1974, the Soviet Government adopted the Resolution "On the Construction of the Baikal-Amur Main Line." The construction of the railway was carried out in extremely difficult climatic conditions. The railway crosses mountain ranges, rivers and permafrost zones. The BAM is part of the Eastern Railway network and is the shortest route to the Pacific Ocean, passing through the territories of the Irkutsk and Amur regions, the Trans-Baikal Territory, Buryatia, Yakutia and the Khabarovsk Territory.

Following the commissioning of the BAM, Russia has gained infrastructure for the international transit transport system and increased the economic development potential of Siberia and the Far East. Today, the BAM plays a key role in increasing eastbound rail freight traffic, opening up the rapidly growing markets of the Asia-Pacific region for Russian companies.

The reverse of the coin features relief images of the railway stations of the town of Tynda (left) and the settlement of Ulkan (right), an electric locomotive, a fir tree on a rock and a house from one of the series designed for BAM settlements, as well as images of freight cars, mountains and forests. There are also the inscriptions: “Baikal-Amur Mainline” at the bottom, and “50 YEARS” at the top right.

While the obverse shows a relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation and the semicircular inscription “РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ” (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) framed with diamonds on both sides. Below the coat of arms are the chemical symbol for the metal, the fineness, the fine metal content and the mint mark. Below, in three lines, we see the inscription “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA), the face value of the coin “3 РУБЛЯ” (3 RUBLES), and the year of issue “2024 г.” (2024).
