Last March, a coin was issued by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano to mark the circumnavigation of the globe by the famous Italian training ship "Amerigo Vespucci", a true symbol of navigation and maritime history.

Training ship Amerigo Vespucci and her second voyage around the world

The Amerigo Vespucci, a training ship of the Italian Navy, was built in 1930 and was designed by Lieutenant Colonel Francesco Rotundi, a member of the "Genio Navale". On 15 October 1931, in the port of Genoa, she received the battle flag from her first commander, Augusto Radicati di Marmorito.

Today, the Amerigo Vespucci is used to train naval cadets in navigation, maneuvers and teamwork. It has participated in numerous regattas and international events.

The second circumnavigation of the globe by the Amerigo Vespucci is an epic journey that is underway. This training ship of the Italian Navy, considered one of the most beautiful in the world, left Genoa on July 1, 2023. During its voyage, it will visit 31 stops in 28 countries, touching all five continents. Some of the notable stops include Marseille, Las Palmas, Dakar, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Manila, Singapore, Mumbai, Karachi, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, and Larnaca. Finally, the Amerigo Vespucci is expected to return to Italy via the Suez Canal in February 2025.

 

The reverse of the coin features the Logo of the 2023-2025 World Tour of the Amerigo Vespucci ship, composed of the representation of the historic training ship of the Italian Navy and the inscription “AMERIGO VESPUCCI WORLD TOUR 2023-2025”. On the right we see the value “5 EURO”, on the left the letter “R”, identifying the Mint of Rome, and in the lower central part, the year of issue “2024” and the author’s signature “E.FERRETTI” (Emanuele Ferretti). 

 

The obverse of the coin shows the heraldic shield of the Italian Navy, consisting of a Samnite shield with the symbols of the four Italian maritime republics, Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Amalfi and the naval crown. Around the composition is the inscription of the issuing country "REPUBBLICA ITALIANA".
