A coin has just been issued in Italy, very curious in its shape, with a double dedication, on the one hand it is dedicated to the European Athletics Championships Rome 2024, and on the other to one of the great athletes of all time, Pietro Mennea .

This collector's coin has the shape of an athletics track, is made of gilt silver, has a face of 10 euros, although its sale price in Italy is 85 euros, and has a limited circulation of 5,000 copies.

European Athletics Championships Rome 2024

From June 7 to 12, 2024, the continent's best athletes will compete in the Olympic Stadium, the Foro Italico Park and some of Rome's most picturesque streets, 50 years after the European Athletics Championships were held in Rome in 1974 and for the third time in Italy after the first edition in Turin 1934.

The European Athletics Championships in Rome 2024 will precede the start of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris by a month and a half and will therefore represent a crucial competitive test for athletes ahead of the next Olympic event.

The obverse of the coin is a representation of an athletics track with its characteristic elliptical shape and its streets. In the center, the official logo of the European Athletics Championships in Rome 2024 flanked by the inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”; On the right is the signature of the author “E.FERRETTI”. Known as "The Arrow of the South", he achieved exceptional achievements, such as the world record in the 200 meter dash, which stood for 17 years, and the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

The reverse of the coin shows Pietro Mennea, legendary Italian sprinter, he is represented with the bib number "433", which he wore when he won the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games, and the shorts with the number "8", which indicates the street on which he reached the highest podium. Below, on the left, the value “10 EURO”; top, left, “PIETRO MENNEA”, “LA FRECCIA DEL SUD” and “2024”, year of issue of the coin; in the center, the letter “R”, which identifies the Rome Mint.
