Next July 3, the Vatican State Mint continues its series of coins dedicated to the twelve apostles, issuing this year a 5 euro coin with the image of Saint Philip and another 10 euro coin with the image of Saint Bartholomew.

5 euro coin – The Twelve Apostles: Saint Philip

The artist Luigi Oldani represents the apostle in his old age, symbolized by his long beard and curved shoulders. On the right side of the coin appears the cross, a symbol of his martyrdom. Saint Philip followed Jesus from the beginning of his ministry until his Ascension. The New Testament does not provide many details about him, but according to tradition Philip, like the other apostles, traveled to different regions to spread Christianity. He reached Scythia (near present-day Ukraine) and then Phrygia (in present-day Turkey), in whose capital, Hierapolis, he was martyred by crucifixion upside down by order of a Roman proconsul.

10 euro coin – The Twelve Apostles: Saint Bartholomew

The 10 euro coin is dedicated to the apostle Bartholomew. Originally from Cana of Galilee, tradition speaks of his life as a missionary in the Middle East. According to the scant news that has reached him, he was skinned alive and decapitated around the middle of the 1st century in Armenia. On the reverse of the coin, our artist Antonella Napolione represents the Apostle with his hands crossed and looking down, where next to the Gospel there is a knife that symbolizes his martyrdom. To the left of the coin a skin is represented with features of his suffering face.
