On March 7, a new coin from the series "The Wonderful World of Insects" was issued. For this, the sixth coin in the collection, the Green Grasshopper, one of the largest and most common in Europe, was chosen.

Green Grasshopper (Tettigonia Viridissima)

Females are slightly larger than males and also have an ovipositor 1 to 2 cm long. In addition to the appearance, the “song” of the males is characteristic of the species, for which they use their forewings. There are the so-called stridulation organs. When males reach sexual maturity, they rub their forewings, which are barely or not raised at all. The resulting sound can be heard up to 150 m away. The eggs are deposited on the ground by the female using the laying stinger and they spend the winter there for at least two months. In late April, tiny wingless grasshoppers hatch and molt several times as they grow to maturity. Its habitat includes shrubs, meadows and forest edges with vegetation at least 30 cm high. The green grasshopper can also be seen in the home garden and flies very well. But he usually only does it when he gets scared. This typical shock gave the grasshoppers their name.

The obverse of the coin almost entirely shows a female green grasshopper, perched on a leaf. At the bottom the name of the insect appears in German and we can also see on the right side the initials of the coin's designer, PN (Patrick Niesel).

On the other hand, the reverse of the piece, common to all the coins in the series, has been created by the Berlin artist André Witting. The central design presents a stylized eagle representing the Coat of Arms of Germany, next to it appear the inscriptions of: the face value “5 EURO”, the issuing country “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (Federal Republic of Germany), the date of issue “ 2024”, the twelve European stars and the D (Munich) mintmark.

The edge of the coin is smooth, and the inscription “WUNDERWELT INSEKTEN” (THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF INSECTS) is engraved on it.

There are two versions for this coin. The Proof quality went on sale in Germany for 15.95 euros, while the BU quality can be purchased in the country's banks at its face value (5 euros).
