The sixth coin in the series of coins called “Luminous Marine Life” has been issued by the Austrian Mint. The new coin is dedicated to the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca, also known in Spain as acalefo luminescente or luminescent jellyfish.

Pelagia noctiluca (luminescent jellyfish)

Pelagia noctiluca, belonging to the scyphozoans, is a type of jellyfish found in the waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This marine creature usually lives in open areas of the ocean, although it sometimes forms large groups near beaches, which can make bathing difficult due to the extremely stinging nature of its cnidocytes.

As fleeting as a dream, Pelagia noctiluca is a transparent and delicate creature, moving through the water with a gentle pumping motion, as if in slow motion. Its entire body can glow, and when it comes into contact with a solid object, its bell and tentacles produce a light that can last up to a few minutes. This bioluminescence is generated when a luminescent molecule is "turned on" by an enzyme. In addition, the mucosa that covers the jellyfish also begins to glow and, if it sticks to another object, it can continue to glow like this for a short period of time.

On the reverse of the coin a wide band reminiscent of an old porthole is depicted with the inscriptions: the name of the sea creature in German "LEUCHTQUALLE", and further down, the year of issue "2024". As the central motif we see an aquatic scene in which a Pelagia noctiluca appears in the center along with other jellyfish swimming under the sea, and in the distance, an island with palm trees and seagulls.

Like the entire Luminous Marine Life collection, when the coin is illuminated by ultraviolet light, its reverse glows, and this time it shows the Pelagia noctiluca of a different color, so that the light brown of its bell turns blue or red, when just like the pinkish violet of its tentacles and arms.

While the obverse of the coin features the silhouettes between bubbles of the total of 12 sea creatures that make up the Luminous Marine Life collection. Surrounding the central composition we see a fin submerging under the waves, the name of the issuing country "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" (REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA) and the face value "3 EURO".
