Last January the Swiss Mint, Swissmint, issued the last bimetallic coin in the “Swiss Glaciers” series. This piece is dedicated to the Rhône Glacier, the largest glacier in the Uranian Alps.

Rhône Glacier

The glacier, which at the time this coin was minted was 8 kilometers long and on average 2 kilometers wide, is located in the northeastern corner of the canton of Valais, in Goms. This valley glacier originates on the southwestern side of the Dammastock massif at an altitude of approx. 3,600 meters. The first 2.5 kilometers of the glacier are formed by a firmament, the Eggfirn, which covers a slope of more than 600 meters.

The Rhône Glacier is connected to the Trift Glacier through a small pass at 3,081 meters above sea level. The headwaters of the Rhône, the river that flows into the Mediterranean, are also located on the Rhône Glacier. The glacier is easy to reach from the Furka Pass. Just below the Furka Pass is the ice cave, excavated in the glacier since 1870 and which allows you to visit its interior. Like most Alpine glaciers, the Rhône Glacier has retreated quite a bit in recent centuries.

On the reverse of the coin we can see a detailed representation of the Rhône glacier around 1780. Surrounding the central motif we see the inscription in German "RHONEGLETSCHER" (RHONE GLACIER), at the bottom of the composition the name of the engraver is shown "MASCHERINI" (Remo Mascherini), together with the coats of arms of the Swiss Confederation, the canton of Valais and the commune of Obergoms.

On the other hand, the reverse of the piece has the inscriptions of: the Latin name "CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA" (Swiss Confederation), the face value of 10 FR, the year of issue "2024", and the mint mark "B » (Bern).
