In 2000, Ecuador adopted the US dollar as its legal tender, thus marking the end of the issuance of its hitherto currency, the sucre. However, in order to address the need for fractional currency and avoid price rounding, coins continue to be minted.

At the end of last year, the “National Fractional Currency Minting Program 2023 – 2025” began. This process, carried out in collaboration with The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom, aims to progressively replace damaged coins.

Within this issuance of national fractional currency there will be new national figures whose positive impact on the history of Ecuador will remain over time due to their valuable contributions to democracy, human rights and the development of its national identity.
