If yesterday I presented you the coin that will be issued to honor our women's soccer World Champions, today I present another novelty that will go on sale on the same date, next Tuesday, December 19, and that will feature Jorge Juan, Spanish Scientist and Sailor, of whom it is 310 years since his birth and 250 years since his death and who will be recognized with a very beautiful coin.

250TH ANNIVERSARY JORGE JUAN

Jorge Juan y Santacilia (Novelda, January 5, 1713 – Madrid, June 21, 1773) was one of the most interesting characters of the Spanish 18th century. He was a mathematician, scientist, naval officer and sailor. He studied modern technical and scientific subjects such as geometry, trigonometry, astronomy, navigation, hydrography and cartography. He participated in numerous expeditions and campaigns in the Mediterranean.

In 1734, King Philip V of Spain asked George John to join the French Geodetic Mission to measure the length of a degree of meridian arc at the South American equator and determine the roundness of the Earth. After nine years of meticulous study, he determined that the Earth is not perfectly spherical but oval, that is, flattened at the poles.

Jorge Juan also successfully measured the heights of the Andes mountains using a
barometer. He was sent to England to gather information on British shipbuilding methods and secretly recruit a group of technicians. He put into
practice the modern industrial division of labor between the different disciplines involved in shipbuilding, such as dry docks, shipyards, furnaces, rigging
and canvas manufacturing. In 1757 he founded the Royal Astronomical Observatory of
Madrid. He died in Madrid in 1773. The current Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda is located on the street named after him.

The obverse of the coin shows a portrait of Jorge Juan, by Rafael Tegeo Díaz, 1828.

The reverse of the coin shows the Santísima Trinidad ship.
